He initially contemplated a career as a priest but later became a journalist for De Gids. Subsequently, he served as a professor of art and literary history at the Catholic University of Nijmegen. Van Duinkerken was a Catholic and wrote sacred poetry. In 1954, he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, with a statue erected in his honor in Bergen op Zoom.
