Ardashes Aykanian was an American engineer and inventor who created the modern flexible plastic straw. He was born on July 1, 1923, in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, and passed away on September 10, 2016. His patented design (US4216801A) from 1980 featured a straw capable of bending without significant elastic recovery. Aykanian held over 40 patents, including for a spoon straw presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and developed a special tool for cryosurgical treatment of skin cancer.
