He participated in several elections, securing a victory as an independent candidate in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1957. Bardhan contested the Lok Sabha elections in 1967 and 1980 but faced defeats. He became more active in Delhi politics in the 1990s and took over as General Secretary of the CPI in 1996 after Indrajit Gupta's tenure.
