Aref El Rayess (1928 - 2005) was a Lebanese painter born in Aley, Mount Lebanon. He began his professional career as a scientific artist in 1948 and lived in Africa for several years, traveling between Senegal and Paris. In Paris, he joined the studios of notable artists while studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1957, he returned to Lebanon but left again in 1959 for Florence on a scholarship, later living in Rome from 1960 to 1963 for study and exhibition before returning to Lebanon in 1963.
