He specializes in history and has written columns for Metro and Kaleva as well as working as a reporter for Yleisradio. Turunen has produced several radio programs focusing on history and science. He has held positions as head of communications at the Finnish Forest Research Institute, the CSC IT Center for Science, and the Academy of Finland. Since 2016, he has been the editor-in-chief of the Finnish edition of Le Monde diplomatique & Novaja Gazeta.
