Adrianus Bernardus Antonius (Arie) Elpert, known as Haring Arie, was a Dutch criminal and pimp born on February 7, 1923, in Amsterdam. He had a troubled childhood, ending up in an orphanage after his parents divorced. He turned to crime early on, becoming a burglar, and was later imprisoned during World War II. After the war, he became involved in train robberies in France. In the 1950s, he sold herring without a permit at Rembrandtplein, where he met his wife, a prostitute. He gained national fame in 1968 by narrating the documentary 'Rondom het Oudekerksplein'.
