Arkin Mahmud is a Uyghur refugee who was detained for seven and a half years by the United States at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Born on July 1, 1964, in Gulja, China, he traveled to Afghanistan in search of his younger brother, where he was captured and became one of twenty-two Uyghur detainees. His health deteriorated significantly by the summer of 2009, and in 2005 he experienced solitary confinement. In 2008, judge Ricardo Urbina declared his detention unlawful and ordered his release, subsequently transferring him to Switzerland on March 23, 2010.
