Arlene Pieper (born Arlene Val Richter) was the first woman to officially finish a marathon in the U.S. when she completed the Pikes Peak Marathon in 1959. She trained for a year to promote her gym, Arlene's Health Studio. In 1959, she finished the marathon in 9:16 after previously attempting the race in 1958. She was later recognized for her achievement in 2009 and served as the official starter for the marathon. Pieper attended the event annually until her death in 2021 at the age of 90.
