Arlindo Barbeitos is an Angolan poet born on December 24, 1940, in Catete, Ícolo e Bengo. He went into exile in 1961 for political reasons and later studied ethnology and sociology in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and West Germany from 1965 to 1969. Barbeitos also served as a university professor in Lubango and at the Catholic University of Angola. He fought with the MPLA during Angola's War of Independence from 1961 to 1975. His poetry reflects elements of traditional African oral poetry and influences from Chinese and Japanese poetry.
