He worked as a bookseller and in publishing advertising, representing various publishers. From the 1990s, he published 'Die Tollen Hefte' and organized events at several universities focusing on books and illustration. After his passing, his work continued under the guidance of his wife, Rotraut Susanne Berner. Abmeier lived in Munich, co-founded 'Die Tolle Galerie,' and was curator for the Illustration Foundation.
