José Arnoldo Alemán Lacayo, born on January 23, 1946, in Managua, served as President of Nicaragua from 1997 to 2002. He worked as a lawyer from 1968 to 1979 and was imprisoned for nine months by the Sandinista National Rehabilitation Board. Alemán revitalized the Liberal Party in Nicaragua, renaming it to the Liberal Alliance. He was elected mayor of Managua in the early 1990s. In 1996, he won the presidency against Sandinista Daniel Ortega. Alemán was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2003 for crimes including money laundering and embezzlement.
