Arnulf Abele was a highly decorated major in the Wehrmacht during World War II, later becoming a colonel in the Bundeswehr. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his service. Captured by American troops in 1944, he was held until his release in 1946. Following this, he joined the Bundeswehr, where he served until the end of his military career in 1973.
