Aron Atabek (1953–2021) was a prominent Kazakh writer, poet, and dissident known for his critical stance against the Kazakh government. He was a leader of the Alash National Freedom Party and served as president of the political council of the Kazakhstan National Front. Following Kazakhstan's independence, Atabek faced imprisonment for fifteen years due to his opposition to President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his literary works. After his release in October 2021, he passed away a month later from COVID-19 in Almaty.
