Artashes Matevosyan was an Armenian Soviet botanist born on March 9 (22), 1904, in Karchavan, Zangezur Province, then part of the Russian Empire. He earned a Doctorate in Agricultural Sciences in 1948 and became a professor in 1949. He was recognized as an Honored Figure of Science of the Armenian SSR in 1961 and was elected as an Academician of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences in 1996, having been a corresponding member since 1971. Matevosyan was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1938.
