Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. (1943–1993) was an American tennis player who turned professional in 1969. He became the first black man to win the men's singles title at Wimbledon in 1975. Throughout his career, he won three Grand Slam singles titles: the US Open in 1968, the Australian Open in 1970, and Wimbledon in 1975, as well as two Grand Slam doubles titles. Ashe was born on July 10, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia, and he passed away on February 6, 1993, due to complications related to AIDS. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1993.
