Arthur Kornberg was an American biochemist born in New York City on March 3, 1918. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1959, shared with Severo Ochoa for discovering the mechanism of DNA synthesis. In 1951, he received the Paul-Lewis Award in Enzyme Chemistry from the American Chemical Society. He earned an honorary doctorate from Yeshiva University in 1962 and received the National Medal of Science in 1979. His research focused on biochemistry, particularly enzyme chemistry, DNA synthesis, and studying nucleic acids that control heredity in various organisms.
