Arthur Mitchell was an American ballet dancer and choreographer, renowned for his significant contributions to dance in the United States. Born on March 27, 1934, in Harlem, he studied at the New York School of the Arts and began his career in Broadway musicals. Mitchell became the first African American dancer to join the New York City Ballet in 1956, performing in works by George Balanchine. In 1968, he co-founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem, which aimed to promote diversity in ballet and provide training for young minority dancers.
