Arthur Newell Strahler was an American hydrologist and professor of geosciences at Columbia University. He was born on February 20, 1918, in Kolhapur, India, and passed away on December 6, 2002. Strahler is renowned for developing a system in 1952 for classifying river networks based on the amount of water their tributaries carry, known as Strahler Stream Order. He significantly contributed to transforming geomorphology from a descriptive and qualitative science into a quantitative and computational one in the mid-20th century.
