Arthur Roy Clapham was a distinguished British botanist born in Norwich on May 24, 1904. Educated at Downing College, Cambridge, he worked as a crop physiologist at Rothamsted Experimental Station before becoming a lecturer in botany at Oxford University. Clapham served as Professor of Botany at Sheffield University from 1944 to 1969 and was vice chancellor during the 1960s. He co-authored the groundbreaking 'Flora of the British Isles', first published in 1952. He is credited with coining the term 'ecosystem' in the early 1930s at the request of botanist Arthur Tansley.
