He oversaw the Metallurgical Laboratory, which created the first nuclear reactors that produced plutonium for the Fat Man bomb, used in Nagasaki. He warned General Eisenhower about German radioactive weapon threats before D-Day. Following the war, he led the Fissionable Materials Branch at the Atomic Energy Commission and later managed the Atomic Energy Division at American Machine and Foundry, supervising the construction of numerous research reactors globally.
