Artie P. Hatzes is an American astrophysicist born in 1957 in Havre de Grace, Maryland. He specializes in the detection and characterization of exoplanets, having discovered three: Beta Gem b in 1993, Epsilon Eridani b in 2000, and HD 13189 b in 2005. Hatzes earned his Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1984 and has collaborated with notable scientists at McDonald Observatory. He is currently a professor at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, where he also directs the Karl Schwarzschild Observatory.
