Haji Ashaari Mohammad (30 October 1937 – 13 May 2010) was the prominent leader of the Islamic sect Al-Arqam in Malaysia. The sect faced a ban from the Malaysian government on 21 October 1994. Following this, Ashaari and several members were arrested in Thailand, returned to Malaysia, and detained under the Internal Security Act from 1994 to 2004. During his detention, he was compelled to confess to alleged wrongdoings without the opportunity for defense. He was affectionately known as 'Abuya' by his followers and was recognized for his distinct appearance, including a turban and kohl-lined eyes.
