Ashpan Annie, born Anne M. Welsh on January 25, 1916, was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion. At just 23 months old, she lost her mother and brother in the blast but survived after being sheltered under a kitchen stove by warm ashes. Rescued a day later by a soldier and a neighbor, she lived most of her life in the Hydrostone district. After working as a laundry worker, she married Angus Welsh, who passed away in the 1990s. Annie died on July 18, 2010, at The Berkeley, Gladstone Ridge.
