Asifa Akhtar (born February 19, 1971) is a molecular biologist from Karachi, Pakistan, known for her significant contributions to chromatin regulation. She is a senior group leader and director at the Max Planck Institute for Immunbiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg, Germany. Akhtar's research focuses on chromatin and epigenetic mechanisms, particularly in Drosophila melanogaster, studying aspects such as dosage compensation and nuclear RNA helicase function. She was elected as the first international female vice president of the Biology and Medicine section of the Max Planck Society in July 2020.
