Atena Farghadani is an Iranian artist and political activist born on January 29, 1987. She gained international attention after being imprisoned for 18 months, with Amnesty International considering her a prisoner of conscience. Farghadani criticized a proposed law that banned voluntary sterilization and restricted access to contraception through her artwork, depicting Iranian officials as monkeys and goats. After posting her works on Facebook, she was arrested in August 2014 and imprisoned for three months on charges of propaganda and insulting parliament members and the Supreme Leader of Iran. She was released on May 3, 2016.
