Athanasios Papas, born on March 22, 1936, in Chalcedon, is a former Metropolitan of Chalcedon in the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He studied at the Theological School of Halki, graduating in 1959, and later earned a PhD from the University of Munich in 1965. Athanasios served as a professor of Christian archaeology and art at the Theological School of Halki. He was ordained as a deacon in 1959 and became a presbyter in 1972, subsequently elected as bishop and then metropolitan in the following years. He held various positions within the church until being declared inactive in 2021.
