Athos is a German Shepherd and military dog of the Czech Republic Army, born in 2009. Trained for explosives detection, he served in Afghanistan with soldier Rostislav Bartončík. He suffered severe injuries during a Taliban attack in September 2012 but was saved by American medics. Recovering in a veterinary hospital, he returned to training in January 2014. Athos received several awards including a hero's blanket and a leather collar signed by the Minister of Defense. In December 2015, he was listed on a site for retired military dogs, but the ad was pulled after public outcry.
