He served as the publishing director of Det Norske Samlaget for 23 years, from 1981 to 2004, after starting as the financial manager in 1971. With a legal education from the University of Oslo, he contributed significantly to the publishing industry. Heskestad has held leadership positions in Nynorsk Pressekontor and Den norske forleggerforening. In 2011, he was appointed Knight of St. Olav for his contributions to the nynorsk written culture.
