He was recognized as an authority in fruit cultivation, notably creating the Goldstar apple. Smeyers was ordained as a priest in 1942 and began teaching at the Agricultural School of Tienen, becoming its director in 1948, a position he held until 1981. He contributed greatly to the field by giving lectures throughout Hageland and experimenting with various fruit varieties.
