He graduated as a civil engineer in 1967 and commenced his military career in the air force. Over the years, he held various significant positions, including commander of the maintenance squadron of the 10th Tactical Wing and eventually became a lieutenant general. Van Daele was appointed as the Army Commander on December 6, 2002, and was also a royal aide-de-camp.
