August 'Staf' Vivijs was a Belgian resistance fighter born on October 10, 1922. In August 1940, he co-founded the resistance movement 'De zwarte hand' during World War II. Vivijs compiled 'black lists' of collaborators and buried their names for future retrieval post-war. Following a German crackdown after the escape of Louis Houthooft in October 1941, Vivijs was arrested on October 27, 1941, and imprisoned in Fort Breendonk, later deported to Mauthausen concentration camp where he was liberated on May 5, 1945, and repatriated on May 21, 1945.
