August Walling (1911-1989) was an SS Hauptscharführer and commandant of the Hessental concentration camp, known for his violent outbursts and a complex character. He was part of the Luftwaffe and later the Waffen-SS, serving at various concentration camps during WWII. After the war, he was convicted of war crimes and imprisoned for ten years. Following his release, he became a choir leader and conductor for music associations until his death in Geislingen. His leadership in the camp was marked by a high death rate and horrific conditions for prisoners.
