He played both traditional folk melodies and popular music, notably using the machine kantele. Aulis was recognized for his musical talents, receiving the title of Mestaripelimanni in 2000. He was the son of Eeli Kivinen, a master folk singer known as Väinämöinen in Vimpeli, and his brother Pentti received the same title in 2002.
