Austen Deans was a prolific New Zealand writer and artist born on December 2, 1915, in Christchurch. He developed an interest in art during his teenage years and studied fine arts at the Canterbury College of Arts. During World War II, he served as a war artist with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force after being conscripted. He was captured during the Battle of Crete but was allowed to continue painting in captivity. After the war, he continued his artistic pursuits in England before returning to the Canterbury region, where he became known for his depictions of the area's hills. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1995.
