Auvo Kurvinen was a professor of English literature at the University of Helsinki from 1972 to 1979. Born on January 18, 1916, in Pirkkala, she graduated as a Bachelor of Philosophy in 1941 and earned her Doctorate in 1951 with a thesis on St. Catherine of Alexandria under the supervision of J.R.R. Tolkien. She also contributed lyrics to many songs of her cousin Toivo Kärki in the 1940s but requested that they be credited to Kärki to preserve her academic reputation. Her role as a lyricist was revealed posthumously in the 1990s.
