B.K. Kalymbetov was a prominent Kazakh scientist, specializing in mycology and phytopathology. Born on March 15, 1920, he was the first Kazakh expert to study fungi and received his Doctorate of Biological Sciences in 1963. He established a school for the biology of microscopic parasitic fungi in Kazakhstan and contributed significantly to the understanding of mycology in Central Asia. As a professor and head of the laboratory at the Botanical Institute, he discovered over 50 new species of fungi. He was awarded multiple national honors for his service during World War II.
