His sect faced opposition from mainstream Khalsa Sikhs and garnered controversy, particularly after the publication of the Bhavsagar Granth in 2001, which was deemed insulting to the Sikh faith. This led to violence against his followers and ultimately the ban on the text by the Punjab government, resulting in Bhaniara's arrest.
