Babrak Karmal (1929 – 1996) was an Afghan politician, diplomat, and lawyer, born in Kabul to a Tajik family of Pashtun origin. He was appointed as the President of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union in 1979 after the Soviet invasion, serving for seven years. Karmal was a founding member of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) and led the Parcham faction. His leadership struggled against the rival Khalq faction and faced significant challenges in legitimizing his government. Karmal was dismissed in 1986 and later returned to Afghanistan in 1991 before passing away in 1996 from liver cancer.
