He is the co-founder and current president of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee, which operates under the AFL-CIO. Velásquez has been recognized for his contributions to labor rights, receiving the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 1989, also known as the 'Genius Grant'. In 1994, he was honored with the Order of the Aztec Eagle, Mexico's highest award for a non-citizen, highlighting his advocacy for labor rights and immigrant communities.
