Banza Mukalay was a prominent Congolese politician born on January 2, 1953, in Coquilhatville. He served as the Minister of Culture and the Arts from December 2014 until his passing in May 2016. His previous roles included Minister of Youth, Sports, Culture and the Arts and Minister of Mines under different administrations. A member of the Popular Movement of the Revolution during Mobutu's regime, Mukalay went into exile after the 1997 overthrow of Mobutu. He returned to the government in 2004 and played a key role in organizing notable cultural events.
