Barbara McClintock (June 16, 1902 - September 3, 1992) was an American scientist renowned for her pioneering work in cellular genetics, particularly with corn. She earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1927 and spent her career investigating chromosomes and their behaviors during plant reproduction. McClintock introduced techniques for visualizing chromosomes and contributed foundational genetic concepts such as genetic recombination. Her research led to the first genetic map of corn, for which she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983, being the only woman to receive it alone for such work.
