Barrie Devenport was a notable New Zealand swimmer and lifesaver, renowned for being the first person in modern history to swim across the Cook Strait. Born on 7 October 1935 in Wellington, he completed his historic swim on 20 November 1962, covering the distance from Cape Terawhiti to Wellington Rock in 11 hours and 13 minutes. His accomplishments earned him a place in the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. Devenport passed away on 25 July 2010, after battling cancer for 18 months.
