Barry C. Barish is an American experimental physicist and Nobel Prize laureate. He serves as a professor emeritus at the California Institute of Technology and is a prominent expert in gravitational waves. In 2017, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics alongside Rainer Weiss and Kip Thorne for their crucial contributions to the LIGO observatory and the detection of gravitational waves. In 2018, he joined the faculty at the University of California, Riverside, becoming the institution's second Nobel laureate. In Fall 2023, he will be the inaugural chair of physics at Stony Brook University.
