Barton Kay Kirkham was a former member of the United States Air Force who committed robbery while AWOL and was discharged in 1955. He was convicted in 1956 for the armed murder of two grocery store clerks in Salt Lake City, Utah, leading to a death sentence. Seeking publicity, he chose hanging as his execution method. His execution in 1958 marked the first hanging in Utah in 46 years, making him the last person to be executed in this manner by the state.
