Behnam Afas is an Iraqi-New Zealand writer born on July 17, 1934, in Mosul, Northern Iraq. He comes from a Chaldean Catholic family, with his father being a trader. Afas is the second of six siblings. After completing his secondary education in Mosul, he was sent by his father to Baghdad to pursue higher education. He studied at the Higher Teachers Institute, graduating with honors in literature in 1955. He later completed his postgraduate studies at the Sorbonne University in France.
