Benjamin F. 'Ben' Thigpen was an American jazz drummer born on November 16, 1908, in Laurel, Mississippi. He started piano lessons from his sister and later switched to drums. Thigpen played in Bobby Boswell's band before moving to Chicago, where he studied with Jimmy Bertrand and accompanied dancers. He recorded with notable artists like Ma Rainey and was part of Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy from 1930 to 1947. He also led his own bands in St. Louis and taught Charles Bobo Shaw. He was the father of musicians Bensid and Ed Thigpen.
