Bernardine Evaristo is an English author who won the Booker Prize in 2019 for her novel 'Girl, Woman, Other', becoming the first Black woman to receive this honor. She was born in Woolwich, southeast London, and earned a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of London. In 1982, Evaristo co-founded the Black Women's Theatre Company. She established a writers' development agency called Spread The Word and was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her services to literature, as well as the Brunel International African Poetry Prize.
