James Bernard Machen is an American university professor and administrator, born on March 26, 1944, in Mississippi. He has held prestigious positions, including president of the University of Utah and the University of Florida. Machen earned several academic degrees before transitioning to administrative roles. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. Although he announced his intention to step down in 2013, he remained to assist in the transition until he was succeeded by W. Kent Fuchs on January 1, 2015.
