Albert Engelhard Jan (Bert) Smidt is a Dutch politician of the PvdA, born on February 14, 1944, in Groningen. He graduated in law from the University of Groningen and worked for the province of Groningen. Smidt served as a municipal council member, becoming chairman of the PvdA faction in Slochteren, and was the mayor of Oude Pekela. He held the mayoralty of Hefshuizen, later renamed Eemsmond, until 1997. After that, he took on various roles in government and business, including positions at Het Goed B.V., Marktplaats, and RBA.
