Big Joe Turner, born Joseph Vernon Turner Jr. on May 18, 1911, in Kansas City, Missouri, was an influential American blues singer. Active in the music scene from the 1920s to the 1980s, Turner is considered one of the pioneers of rock and roll during the 1950s. His contributions to the genre were significant, with composer Doc Pomus famously stating that rock and roll would not have been possible without him. Turner passed away on November 24, 1985, in Inglewood, California.
